We can see that after clicking on the hyperlink, It is driving us to another article on the same website. This is a kind of internal linking. Now let’s know about the importance of internal linking and why we should use it on our blog.
The Importance of Internal linking For SEO:
The primary goal of search engines is to provide the best information to its user. For making our content best to the search engines and getting higher rank, SEO specialists always recommend creating quality backlinks and effective internal links.
For making your content more accessible to crawlers, increasing your page views and user experience, decreasing bounce rate, internal linking is an essential part. Here are some important points where internal linking will work ideal for you.
1. Better keyword targeting with anchor text:
Basically, internal links are made into a post for providing some additional information or related information to readers. So when you link another similar post of your blog you can easily put that URL within your desired anchor text. In this way, you can target the keyword of that post you are linking and put that keyword as anchor text.
In the case of using long tail keywords, internal linking is very flexible. If you have already done keyword research for that post you are linking, then use that keyword as anchor text otherwise, you can find your targeted keyword by using some free keyword research tools.
2. Internal linking makes your content user-friendly:
Internal linking makes your blog’s navigation system more easy to your readers. Through this internal linking, you can control your reader’s activity. You can send your users to the most relevant and most important page from their landing page.
This activity creates a massive user engagement for your blog. Readers get more related information through internal linking. So internal linking is very user-friendly.
3. Internal linking will increase page views:
You get 100 times more clicks and page views from readers if you do internal linking. When a visitor finds some relevant information, most probably he will click on that link to read more.
That means he will visit another page or post of your blog so your page view will increase dramatically. This activity will boost your Alexa rank too.
4. Pass link juice easily with internal linking:
Internal and external links are very important for a site’s SEO. External or inbound links are those links which point your website (Domain) from another Website (Domain).
These type of links are known as Backlinks. Like these external links, internal links are also equally important for SEO. These internal and External links will let you pass link juice very quickly.
5. Internal linking effect on PageRank:
Page Rank depends on many factors, but one of the major facts of providing PageRank is Backlinks. Google calculate quality backlinks for providing PageRank (PR).
We can consider internal Links as high-quality dofollow backlinks because we usually use anchor text for creating internal links. So internal links will be calculated with inbound links (Backlinks) and give a value to gain higher PageRank.
6. Internal links will decrease Bounce Rate:
As I have told you before that, internal linking will increase page views of your blog that means internal linking will reduce Bounce Rate of your blog.
If a visitor leaves your web page within a very short time and without clicking on any other page is considered that the visitor is bounced from your site. Internal linking could decrease this activity dramatically.
7. Internal linking effect on indexing:
Internal linking will increase the overall crawl rate of search engine’s bots. Perfect internal linking will provide a clear view of your website and your more relevant pages to the crawler.
So Search engine’s crawler will understand your content better. It will be very easy for crawlers to discover your pages through Internal Linking.
Best Practices Of Internal Linking For SEO:
1. Use relevant links:
This is the most important part of establishing effective internal linking. You must provide relevant links while building up internal links. Keep in mind that what your reader needs. A user comes to your article for a particular information you have provided in your article. So you should create internal links based on that information.
If you provide irrelevant links or topics inside your article, you will not get clicks on your link and your user experience will decrease. Suppose your article is about learning SEO. If you have another article on the importance of SEO, then you can connect this two article through internal linking.
But if your article is about SEO and you have another article about how to drive a car then don’t link this because there is no relevancy in between this two article. So you must be conscious about the relevancy of internal linking.
2. Increase contents:
Internal links should be natural. You can not force your readers to click on your links so think about your reader’s interest and then implement links. For doing highly relevant internal linking, you will need many related articles.
So try to write more articles which will increase the chance to establish more relevant and useful internal links into your article. In this way, your readers will get a different type of related information from one of your article.
3. Use of anchor text:
Try to use keywords as the anchor text of that article you are linking. Anchor text will increase keywords value to the search engines. But don’t destroy the sequence and structure of the sentence for implementing anchor text.
Anchor text should look like natural in the sentence. Suppose the keyword is “Importance Of SEO” and you are writing an article on how to learn SEO. So you can say that “We should learn SEO because we can not avoid the “IMPORTANCE OF SEO” to rank up a website in search engines.”
4. Avoid top level pages:
Think about your home page. Your whole blog is linked to your home page, so it contains hundreds of URL of your blog. Research says that Google bot doesn’t crawl more than 200 links on a single page of a regular website. So if you link your home page into one of your posts, then that post will be connected with hundreds of URL of your blog. This is bad for SEO.
So you should try to avoid top level pages in case of internal linking. The best way is connecting single and relevant post or page for better internal linking.
5. Don’t make your links Nofollow:
We are building internal links for improving our reader’s experience and search engine’s visibility. So we should not apply nofollow tags for internal linking because we know that search engine’s crawlers do not go through nofollow links.
Except, we use nofollow tag for preventing search engine’s crawler from visiting external (outbound) bad URLs of our site. So there is no need to tell crawler that my own URL is not trusted to crawl. Always make dofollow links in case of internal linking.
6. Use limited links on a page:
As I have told you that Google crawler don’t read more than 200 URL in a single post or page so if you provide massive links in a single post, this will badly affect your SEO. Your content will be spammy for aggressive use of URLs. Even this activity will decrease your user experience.
These were some highlighted points for making your internal linking strategy. Hope this article will help you for creating effective internal links for your readers. By keeping above criteria in your mind, you will be able to do internal linking for SEO and your readers. If you have any further suggestion or opinion, then feel free to leave a comment.
